Why this matters now

Visitor attractions have two very different chargers to manage

A day-visitor car park and a coach bay have almost nothing in common: different dwell times, different power requirements, and different booking patterns. Managing both through the same unmanaged system usually means one group loses out.

Splitting the two, Park & Charge for cars, pre-bookable CCS DC rapid for coaches, means a tour group's 45-minute stop is never blocked by a day visitor plugged in for three hours, and vice versa.

Can electric coaches and minibuses charge at a visitor attraction?

Yes. De Energy Hub supports CCS DC rapid charging for coaches and minibuses. Vehicle type filtering ensures rapid chargers built for larger vehicles are reserved for the vehicle classes they're rated for, so a car can't accidentally block a coach's charging slot.

Can a coach operator pre-book a charger for a specific tour time?

Yes. Coach and tour operators can pre-book a rapid charger in advance, scheduled around their visit, for example a 45-minute dwell time while passengers tour the site. The charger is held for the right vehicle at the right time.

How does EV charging work for day visitors arriving by car?

Day visitors use Park & Charge, a single booking links a parking space to a charger. They scan a QR code to identify their bay, park, check in via the app to start charging, and pay per kWh or per session.

Can I charge different rates during peak tourist season?

No. Visitors and coach operators book through the app, then scan the QR code on arrival and check in via the app to start their session. Hosts see all activity on a dashboard without needing to be present at the charger.

What connector types are supported for visitor attraction car parks?

Type 2 AC for day-visitor cars, and CCS DC rapid for coaches and minibuses needing a fast top-up during a tour stop. CHAdeMO is also supported for older DC-capable vehicles.

Are there grants available for installing EV chargers at a visitor attraction or car park?

The SEAI Workplace Charging Grant covers up to 60% of installation costs, up to €5,000 per charge point, and is open to any Irish business including visitor attractions. The Accelerated Capital Allowance lets a business deduct the full cost of the charger from taxable profit in the year it's installed. If your car park is run by a local authority, the separate SEAI Public Charge Point Grant for councils may also apply. None of these are administered by De Energy Hub, so check current eligibility on the SEAI and Revenue websites before applying.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger for a visitor attraction car park?

Commercial installations typically start from around €1,700 per unit, excluding any civil works, and vary by supplier, site and the number of coach-rated rapid chargers needed. De Energy Hub doesn't sell hardware. You're free to choose your own installer and charger, then list it on the app once it's in.

Do I need planning permission for EV chargers in a visitor attraction car park?

Generally not for a standard charge point, but requirements can vary by local authority and by scale of installation, particularly larger rapid chargers, groundworks, or new coach bays. Check with your local authority or installer before proceeding.
