The question every guest asks
EHU hook-up or dedicated EV charger: not the same thing
De Energy Hub manages bookings for both, but they're built for different jobs.
🔌
EHU hook-up
Powers the caravan or motorhome itself (lighting, fridge, appliances). Not designed as a fast way to charge a car battery.
ConnectorCommando socket (IEC 60309)
Typical rating10–16A
Best forRunning the van's own systems
⚡
Dedicated EV charger
A separate Type 2 point built specifically to charge the vehicle's traction battery, much faster than an EHU bollard.
ConnectorType 2 AC
Typical rating7kW or 22kW
Best forCharging the vehicle battery
💡 Charging a car directly off a standard EHU bollard via a granny or mode 2 cable is slow and many sites restrict it to protect the shared supply. A dedicated Type 2 charger is the faster, permitted route where one's available.
Fair billing
A late arrival shouldn't pay for a full night
Illustrative example: a guest arriving at 11pm and leaving at 7am.
📱 App booking: flat nightly rate
EHU hook-up, full nightFixed fee

Guest paysSame as a full 24hr stay
📱 App booking: pay by the hour
EHU hook-up, per hourHourly rate

Actual rates are set by each site. The point isn't the numbers. It's that pay-by-hour or kWh billing removes the "midnight arrival, full price" problem entirely.

Campsites & Campervan Parks FAQ
What's the difference between an EHU hook-up and a dedicated EV charger?
+
An EHU (electric hook-up) bollard powers the caravan or motorhome itself (lighting, fridge, appliances) usually via a 16A commando socket. A dedicated EV charger is a separate Type 2 point built to charge the vehicle's traction battery, typically at 7kW or 22kW. De Energy Hub can manage bookings for both.
Can I charge my electric car directly from the EHU hook-up?
+
Charging a car from a standard EHU bollard via a granny or mode 2 cable is slow, typically limited to around 10-16A, and many sites restrict it to protect the shared supply. Where the site has a dedicated Type 2 EV charger, that's the faster, permitted option.
Do I need to bring my own charging cable?
+
Yes, typically. Guests bring their own EHU commando cable or Type 2 charging cable, the same way they would at any Irish campsite. Your booking confirms which connector type is at your pitch or charger before you arrive.
Can I pre-book a pitch with EV charging or EHU hook-up?
+
Yes. Guests can book their pitch together with EHU hook-up or EV charging in advance of arrival, rather than relying on first-come-first-served access to the site's powered pitches.
What happens if I arrive after the office or warden has gone off duty?
+
Guests scan the QR code at the EHU post or charger, check in via the app to book their session, and connect immediately, with no warden or reception needed, at any hour, including late-night arrivals.
How does billing work: by the hour or by kWh?
+
Guests can be billed by the hour or by kWh used, rather than a flat nightly rate. A guest arriving late at night only pays for the electricity or hook-up time they actually use.
What are Pure, Smart and Boost Energy?
+
These are De Energy Hub's three energy rate options, available across all industries including campsites. Pure Energy is 100% renewable supply. Smart Energy automatically blends renewables with the grid. Boost Energy is a set rate for full grid power at maximum output.
